The Key Session

The Key Session or Jam Session promotes drill and practice and develops keyboarding skill that will be used in the career market.

Students who key faster than thirty-five words per minute often get entry-level clerical positions. Students are provided with a Keyboarding Words Per Minute Rubric and the rubric is explained in terms of entry-level pay levels.

I always tell my students, "key as fast as you want to get paid."

Student's who key thirty-five words per minute may get the job, but they will receive a lower pay scale than the students who are able to key sixty-five or more words per minute.

The starting salary scale usually works out like this:

Entry Clerk = 35 wpm = $5.25 per hour
Receptionist = 45 wpm - $5.75 per hour
Office Clerk = 55 wpm = $6.00 per hour
Secretary = 65 wpm = $6.75 per hour
